Food bank receives largest donation of honey in 'Operation Honey Bear Hug' - InForum | Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo news, weather and sports

FARGO — In a donation affectionately known as "Operation Honey Bear Hug," the Great Plains Food Bank received its largest amount of honey ever on Thursday, Jan. 25, which will provide food assistance to more than 10,000 households.

Sitting on two pallets, 6,000 bottles of bear-shaped honey bottles from Sioux Honey Association Cooperative, which is based in Sioux City, Iowa, will go people and families dealing with food insecurity, said Jared Slinde, spokesperson for the Great Plains Food Bank, the only food bank in North Dakota. “This is believed to be the largest honey donation we’ve ever had,” said Slinde.

“North Dakota supplies half of the U.S. honey. It’s the number one producer in the country and not just for Sue Bee. There has to be about a million beehives in the state,” said Dan Bauer, on the board of directors for Sioux Honey.

“It’s very important for us to give back to the people of North Dakota and for putting up with all the hives,” said Bauer.

In North Dakota, bees are attracted to sweet clover, alfalfa and canola, Bauer said, which makes a mild, gold-colored honey.
